Product Description ATO Records is pleased to announce the release of The Drive-By Truckers label debut, The Big To-Do. The album, which will be the band s tenth in their thirteen-year career, is scheduled to be released March 16, 2010. The Big To-Do features thirteen new tracks from the Drive-By Truckers and was produced by their long time producer, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). 'It s very much a rock album,' says Patterson Hood of the Trucker s upcoming release. 'Very melodic and more rocking than anything we ve done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera.'
Hood and Mike Cooley continue to be the chief songwriters of the group, continuing a musical partnership that has lasted over twentythree years. Bassist, Shonna Tucker, flexes her songwriting muscles once again by contributing two original songs to the album. Brad Morgan (drums), John Neff (guitar/pedal steel) and Jay Gonzalez (keyboards) round out the current Drive-By Truckers lineup.
The band recently backed legendary R&B musician, Booker T. Jones, on his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated album, Potato Hole. The album is nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Drive-By Truckers release another winner. July 21, 2010 Carly Errebo (kansas) The Drive-By Truckers new cd "The Big-To-Do" is just a long list of great albums from this smoking Southern rock outfit. Tracks like "Daddy Learned to Fly", "The Fourth Night Of My Drinking" a song that hits home sometimes when i think about my younger days. Patterson Hood also wrote "Drag The Lake Charlie","The Wig He Made Me Wear" this is top notch DBT, also the single from the album "This F---ing Job","After The Scene Dies","Santa Fe" and "The Flying Wallendas". Mike Cooley contributes "Birthday Boy" and the funky "Get Downtown" and ""Eyes Like Glue". Bassist Shonna Tucker adds two songs to the mix, which i think are her best songs yet, "(It's Gonna Be) I Told You So" this should get airplay so people could here another side of the TRUCKERS. Also she wrote "You Got Another". Overall this is in my top 5 of 2010 (so far). Other DBT releases that you should check-out: "Brighter Than Creations Dark", "The Dirty South" and "A BLessing And A Curse".
DBT where have you gone? July 17, 2010 The Dude (Buffalo, NY) I'm constantly suggesting to my friends to give DBT a listen, but I keep forgetting to tell them to avoid "The Big To-Do" at all costs. If I had never heard them before and picked this up to see why both critics and fans rave, I'd think, "You're kidding, right?" What even makes this more dissapointing is that this is the first "fresh" album they've had in a few years. The last two disc were a live concert and a contractual obligation. Cooley still writes, sings and plays great (e.g., "Birthday Boy"); Hood still has a gem or two, even if they are sometimes smothered in self-indulgence("The Flying Wallenda"). But who the hell convinced Shona can sing solo OR write. Boy, the two songs she writes are dull, repetitive, and sung in a way wherein it seems she is on-key by accident, not designed. Come on, really, Cooley didn't have a couple more songs to use instead of these? If you really want to try DBT, go directly to "The Dirty South" which includes the remarkable Jason Isbell, who, since leaving them has put out two stellar discs of his own. Guys, tell me this isn't your "jump the shark" album!?
Not their best, but still good June 24, 2010 Big Guy (Virginia) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I gotta say I'm a huge DBT fan---bought Ganstabilly about 2 years ago after I realized that all my music was old, and went on a renaissance of music, loved it, and bought everything they did in print. But compared to some of their heart wrenching music like Goddamn Lonely Love or Love Like This, or the fun songs like Lisa's Birthday, Daddy's Cup, this album just doesn't have anything that makes you want to pour out 2 fingers of Jim Beam. Hey, still like it when it shuffles along on my Zune, but not their best.
Weak effort May 27, 2010 Bigcat@1984 (Streamwood, IL) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
DBT makes it a point to say this is their 10th album. While its not their worst (that would go to "Brighter than Creations Dark") its in the team photo. If you are new to the band, get "Dirty South", "Southern Rock Opera", or "Pizza Deliverance" and stop reading here. The more recent stuff is just not very good.
For die-hard fans like me, it just seems they have lost something. They still write about "locals" and drinking, etc., but there is no spark. No catchy hooks. No cool choruses. No attitude. It seems life has beaten them down. People keep
saying they miss Jason Isbell, and maybe they do, but it goes deeper than that.
They seem to be trying to avoid being labeled "hicks" or "anthem rockers" or whatever. I still think they are too worried about critical acclaim and not worried enough about their fans and the end product
The liner notes are always fun to read, but these describe nothing but pain, death, heartache, and the pressures of families and parenthood. It may be therapeutic for them to sing these personal songs, but they don't resonate with the audience. Songs like "4th Night Of My Drinking", "The Wig He Made Her Wear",
and "Flying Wallendas" play like boring news stories. They have no heart and soul and I could care less if I hear them again. "Daddy Learned to Fly", "Drag
the Lake..", "After the scene dies", and "Santa Fe" are all pretty good, but
not special. There are 2 Shonna songs (one of which may the shortest song in
history at about 5 lines..) and a couple mediocre Cooley efforts and that's it -
another sub-par record by DBT standards. Hey, at least they don't make us wait years to release a rotten record like some bands!
But seriously, these songs cannot compare to the great stuff on the records listed above. Songs like "Ronnie and Neil", "Life in the Factory", "Daddy's
Cup", "The Company I Keep" tell the same kinds of stories they are going for on
this record, but with and edge and an opinion and some fun. Patterson says on "The Wig He Made Her Wear": "I ain't judging either way..." Well, how about you take a f***ing side and pass some judgment my friend. You would have 10 years ago...
DBT: A Big To-Do May 14, 2010 William E. Houser Jr. (Fort Lauderdale, FL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Big To-Do is the Trucker's 2010 album. It is a quality album, well conceived, well written and well played. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the band misses the little extra that Jason Isbell provided. However, Patterson Hood takes up a good deal of the slack, and it is his tunes that really drive this album, Fourth Night of My Drinking, Drag the Lake Charlie, The Wig He Made Her Wear, This "F"n Job, and the FLying Wallendas are all excellent cuts. I do hope that Cooley contributes more on the next album because I like his songs too. I think Shonna Tucker's tunes are the lowest points on the album, but with time she hopefully will improve.
While this album does not reach the heights of Southern Rock Opera or the Dirty South, it is a fine complement to their catalog. A solid four stars. Recommended.
